Fiol Studio | Fall 2024
In late August of 2024, Fiol Studio brought me onto their team as their first ever Production Designer and Scenic Painter. This meant that not only did I have to walk the organization through the design process, but also model how scenic design adds to the educational components of this after-school theatre program.
Work on this project began in mid-September 2024 and concluded with the show date on November 20th, 2024. Due to a strict budget, I was required to work with easily accessible and inexpensive materials. Additionally, while I had volunteers help with simple tasks, the mural and faux finish work was done entirely by me.
When I met with Director Marcel van Hemert, we talked about what he wanted his student actors to take away from this show. The answer we settled on was this idea of the warmth of found family in destitute times.
We agreed on including the city looming over the orphanage to give it a sense of place and visual cohesion. How hopeless it felt inside of the orphanage was as hopeless as Great Depression-era city life outside. In contrast, Mr.Warbucks’ mansion would convey warmth and wealth.
With limited space I was asked to work with existing periaktoi and flat pieces. I also made it a goal to create with the intention of reusability and sustainability.
With limited digital resources, I resorted to creating a rough massing model in Rhino 7 based on measurements I had taken in a site visit. I then transferred a 2D elevation of the model into Procreate to create quick concept sketches for my team.
